Most residential concrete calls in Houston start with a driveway that has cracked, heaved, or settled. Replacement means removing the failed slab, correcting the sub-base that let it move, and pouring a new reinforced slab with control joints placed where the concrete wants to crack anyway. Extensions and widenings for a third car or a boat pad are built the same way and tied to the existing drive so the seam does not become the next failure line.

The driveway approach, the section between the sidewalk and the street, sits in the public right-of-way. Inside the City of Houston that work typically requires a permit and has its own specifications; in unincorporated Harris County and the surrounding cities the rules differ. A patio slab is the floor of an outdoor room, so it is sized and shaped around how the space will be furnished rather than poured as a rectangle off the back door. Walkways connect it to the drive, the gate, and the yard. Pool decks are the most demanding flatwork we pour: they need consistent slope away from the water, a finish that stays cool and grips wet feet, and drainage that keeps runoff out of the pool and away from the house.

Finishes range from a plain broom texture to exposed aggregate, salt finish, and stamped patterns with integral color. Each is chosen for the setting and priced as its own line, so a homeowner can see exactly what a decorative finish adds over a standard one.

Because we are a general contractor and not only a concrete crew, a lot of our slab work is the foundation for something we are about to build: a solid-roof patio cover, a detached garage, a workshop, or a metal building. Pouring the slab and building the structure under one contract means the footings, anchor points, elevations, and drainage are designed together instead of negotiated between two companies.

Structure slabs are engineered for the load above them. A garage or metal building slab carries vehicles and equipment and is thickened at the edges and under columns; a patio cover slab needs footings under each post. We pour to the engineered drawing and schedule the framing crew for the day the concrete is ready to build on.

Stamped concrete gives a driveway or patio the look of flagstone, slate, or wood plank at a fraction of the cost of the real material, and it holds up to Houston heat and rain when it is done right. That means a proper base and reinforcement under it like any other slab, integral color mixed through the concrete rather than only dusted on top, and a sealer that is reapplied on a schedule so the color and texture last.

We also pour exposed aggregate and salt finishes, and we can match or complement existing stone and brick on the house. Decorative work is planned during design so the pattern lines fall where control joints need to be.

Grade changes, drainage swales, and raised planting beds call for structural retaining walls, and we build them in poured concrete, masonry block, or natural stone depending on height, soil, and the look the yard needs. Every wall is engineered for the soil behind it and drained so water pressure does not build up and push it over, which is the usual reason older walls in Houston fail.

For patios and walkways where a paver look is preferred, we install natural stone and concrete pavers on a compacted, properly drained base. Where an existing concrete patio is sound and the elevations allow it, pavers can be overlaid rather than starting from scratch.

Houston sits on expansive clay that swells when it is wet and shrinks when it is dry, and that movement is what cracks and heaves concrete. Base preparation is the step that decides how long a slab lasts: the sub-grade is graded and compacted, a stable base course is laid and compacted again, and steel reinforcement is placed on chairs so it sits in the slab rather than on the ground under it.

Drainage is the other half of the same problem. Slabs are poured with a consistent slope away from the house, and where a yard collects water we add French drains, area drains, or a channel drain across the driveway so the sub-base stays dry and the concrete stays where it was poured. Both are priced in the itemized quote rather than discovered after the fact.

A site visit establishes the footprint, elevations, drainage path, and whether any existing concrete stays or goes. From that we produce a layout and a free itemized quote with demolition, base, reinforcement, concrete, finish, and any permit fees broken out as separate lines. Once approved, we handle permits where they apply, then schedule demolition and excavation, base preparation, forming and steel, the pour and finish, and joint cutting.

New concrete needs cure time before it carries weight: foot traffic within a day or two, vehicles after roughly a week, and full strength over the following weeks. We tell you those dates at the pour so nothing rolls onto the driveway early, and we come back for the final sealer where a decorative finish calls for it.
